This monthly class is a launch and sustaining platform for continuous practice and study of the eight “petals” of astanga yoga in the Iyengar tradition. Sessions include asana themes, threads, and approaches to more complex asana; preparatory and primary pranayama; and yoga philosophy discussion with practical application to your life and practice.

Optional preparation - Themed, optional reading and study assignments will be provided upon registration to support your own theory and practice exploration prior to each session.

Recommendations: a curiosity to learn and three years of study with a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT).

These informal gatherings to explore the Yoga Sutras will look to the gems of practical wisdom in B.K.S. Iyengar's translation and commentary, Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Other publications by the Iyengars and translations are sometimes woven in. Each gathering will offer a mix of lecture, inquiry, basic pronunciation, chanting, perplexity, and clarity.

For March, we will chant YS 2.1-18 and continue our look into the logical grouping of sutras from the 2nd chapter, Sadhana Pada. If you wish to prepare, read the relevant sections from the Introduction to Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

Or, just come and enjoy the community of others. Learn and simply “be" without worrying about being prepared or having done anything at all special besides living your life and showing up.

Community donation optional — Register for free to receive the meeting link. Email me for donation options.

DEEPER THREADS OF ASANA
In response to a question, “Why practice difficult asanas?”, Geeta S. Iyengar responded, in part, “When you are doing different asanas or varieties of asana, they are shaping, moulding and transforming your consciousness to take you to a higher level. In fact, we have to see how we deal with the different levels of consciousness while practicing these asanas… Therefore, the question is not which asanas you have to do. The question is how are you going to deal with your consciousness? How do you culture your consciousness, so that it can reach different levels?”

We will explore different approaches to plumb the depth of simple asanas with keen observation of their “shaping, molding and transforming” effects. Then proceed toward more complex asanas. Naturally, more complex asanas require a culturing process unique to each individual. Best pathways forward will be discerned through various body, breath and mind coordinations, while remaining mindful of stability, comfort, and effort. Rather than a momentary overdoing to attain an outer shape, we will study “how we deal with different levels of consciousness” to cultivate the ability to accomplish and maintain the asana – how to culture consciousness to reach different levels. The schedule is designed for plenty of time for sharing insights, clarifying doubts, and enjoying the community of yoga friends.

Morning Asana classes are appropriate for continuing beginner and intermediate students. In addition, these classes will provide a firm foundation for further exploration in the afternoon intermediate sessions.

Afternoon Intermediate Topics sessions are for intermediate level students, students mentoring with a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers (CIYTs), and CIYTs of all levels who are keen to learn, share, and help one another. Each session will build upon the morning class and include a mix of practice, theory, and observation/correction skills.
